What You'll Love...

The Markets – The ultimate festive experience

Munich Christmas Market takes place on Marienplatz (St. Mary’s Square) and cannot be missed with its towering Christmas tree that lights up the nativity scenes and rows of stalls. Each evening advent music is performed live from the Town Hall’s balcony and locals join the festive atmosphere while enjoying a Kletznbrot (bread with nuts, fruit and honey) and Fatschnkindl (a pastry shaped like the baby Jesus in the manger).

France’s largest and oldest Christmas market takes place in Strasbourg and is called the Marchés de Noël. Sample the tiny traditional cakes of Alsace called bredeles, warm up with a glass of mulled wine and meander through seemingly endless rows of stalls selling handcrafted ornaments and souvenirs.

The scent of cinnamon and roasted chestnuts waft through the air along the alleyways of Heidelberg Christmas Market in the city’s Old Quarter. Illuminated by thousands of tiny lights, this magical market draws in visitors looking to ice skate on the outdoor rink, enjoy mulled wine with friends or try a lebkuchen (a German Christmas treat similar to gingerbread).

Set against a backdrop of the over thousand-year-old Cathedral of St. Martin, Mainz Christmas Market offers stand after stand of Christmas specialties including homemade garlands, straw stars, tree decorations, wooden toys, ceramics and more.

The Sights – From palaces to castles and waterfalls

Embark on a Munich city tour stopping at the magnificent Nymphenburg Palace, the former summer residence of the rulers of Bavaria known for its beautiful Baroque façade. Arrive at Marienplatz Square to view the city’s ornate Glockenspiel where life-size figures dance to music several times a day.

Admire the fairy tale Linderhof Palace, a triumph of splendor and extravagance in the secluded Graswang valley, built by “Mad” King Ludwig. On to Oberammergau, where the world-famous Passion play is performed every ten years.

Cross into Austria and journey to Innsbruck, the Tyrolean capital of the Austrian Alps, steeped in centuries of colorful history, with its fine examples of Imperial splendor and architectural gems from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical period.

Travel to the tiny storybook Principality of Liechtenstein and its capital Vaduz, a proud remnant of feudal Europe, sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria.

Drive to Schaffhausen to view the thunderous Rhine Waterfall and then head north through the Black Forest region with its thick pine trees and charming traditional homes.

Explore the German-influenced city of Strasbourg in France, viewing the Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame and magical La Petite France district with its quaint shops and bistros.

In Heidelburg, discover the ruins of Heidelburg Castle and wander around the castle terrace enjoying sweeping views before exploring the enchanting alleyways and cozy squares of the Old Town below.
